Housing Plan
In her 2023 Annual State of the State, Governor Kathy Hochul has outlined a plan to end a key part of Local Municipal Home Rule by giving the State the power to override local zoning rules that restrict mixed-use and multiple-family housing.
It also establishes a fast track approval process for developers to build high-density housing within one-half mile of all rail stations run by the MTA.
Residents may read or download the 50 page portion of the plan below.
If you are concerned about the loss of local control of zoning, then we suggest that you call, write, or visit our New York State representatives urging them to vote to remove this item from the proposed NY State budget and message the Governor's office asking her to remove these mandates from her budget proposal.
Any limitation in the way local governments function as radical as this merits deeper, informed discussion and community involvement.
