Mayor's Message - October 2006Dear Neighbors,
Bellerose Village Day was a huge success. With 300 residents in attendance, it was a great evening of food, fun and music! The day started with the famous Village run and walk, and then the Village Recreation area was transformed into a mini carnival. At night we were entertained with music provided by a D.J. and dined on very tasty food provided by Trattoria Lucia in Bellerose. After dinner and dancing it was off to the races. If you were unable to attend this year, mark your calendars for September, 2008. I wish to extend a special thank you to our Recreation Chairman, Noreen Myers for doing such a great job. I know it's a lot of hard work. Thank you Jo Ellen Cortapasso for a well orchestrated bake contest and scavenger hunt and George Morfessis for a successful Village mile. Read on to find out the winners of these events. I would also like to thank the volunteers who staffed the balloon and tattoo booths, especially Deanne Loos and her dad. I would also like to thank Senator Michael Balboni, Councilman Edward Ambrosino, and Legislator Richard Nicolello for attending our day of festivities. In response to questions from some residents, Yes, all three politicians are against the Third Track and have voiced their opposition on many occasions.
Our Memorial Service was held on September 10th. We assembled at Village Hall with a short ceremony and the lighting of candles. There was then a candle lit procession to the Fire House. Once at the Fire House we listened to readings, sang songs, partook in a flag lowing ceremony and ended the evening with the placing of candles at the 9/11 Memorial. I wish to thank Chief Charlie Puglisi and the Fire Department for their time in organizing and participating in the ceremony. I would also like to thank Mother Murphy for her participation and opening of the church to anyone who wished some quite time for reflection.
The leaf season will kick off on October 2nd and end November 24th. Please remember that the leaves in order to be properly picked up should be 18 inches from the curb and not piled too high. Please caution your children not to play in leaf piles for their own safety. Remember, if you have a gardener, your gardener needs to receive a license from Village Hall and is responsible for the removal of leaves from your property.
The tree planting bids are in and we have awarded the contract to ADM Landscaping Corp. in Kew Gardens. Forty (40) trees are scheduled to be planted this fall as part of the first phase of our Beautification plan.
The Board of Trustees has met with Margaret Hagan, Traffic Commissioner, and discussed the recommendations of the Traffic Authority regarding meter upgrades. The Board is in the process of studying the alternative proposals. Thanks again to Commissioner Hagan and her committee.
Halloween season is just around the corner. On Sunday, October 29th at 4 p.m., we will again have a Halloween Parade sponsored by the Junior Women's Club of Bellerose, followed by the Village Recreation Committees Haunted House. Enter if you dare!
In closing I hope to see you at our next Board of Trustees meeting on Monday, October 23rd.
Sincerely yours,
Donna Sherrer
